Users on the social network Tumblr can now add @mentions within the platform. This past Tuesday, Tumbler rolled out @mentions for its fan base, which has long anticipated for the feature. Users can now enjoy the capabilities of adding @mentions, giving credit where it’s due and mentions on their microblogs.
How it works….
A user simply types in the @ sign at which time a drop down list of users will appear, as the user type in the name of the particular individual they want to mention in their post. @Mentions can only be used among users on Tumblr and cannot be linked to outside sources.
Since the debut of the at sign (“@”) on Twitter in 2006, many other social network sites have incorporated it into their platforms. In 2009, Facebook integrated the @ feature for users to mention and tag their friends on posts. The “@” sign is used to describe and direct people to other users or give credit to others. The @ sign evolved into what we know today as @mentions.
The uses of @mentions have become synonymous among millennial’s wanting to connect their world experiences with others. The feature has been around for a couple of years now, but the potential has yet to be exhausted. Many brands and companies have greatly benefited from mentions and tags. It is the, “word-of-mouth” equivalent in today’s social network culture. One simple @mention about a small company or brand can have a huge impact in terms of exposure.
Recently Instagram played around with the idea of product placement through the use of @mentions. There is still great potential to be had between enterprise and @mentions.
