After writing three or more personal injury blogs and pages in a day, my well of creativity can run dry. Tools like ChatGPT can generate elements like blog introductions, calls to action, or transition sentences in the blink of an eye. Unfortunately, they often generate copy that comes off as awkward and robotic.
However, seeing the subpar copy the AI generates sends my brain into editing mode. Instead of staring at a blank page, wondering where to start, I can instead say, “That’s an interesting idea. How do I make it better? How can I word this in a way that is true to the client’s voice and my own style?” Although I don’t believe AI can replace a human writer, it can serve as a helpful tool for generating ideas, breaking writer’s block, and speeding up the writing process.

It can feel weird to apply AI to the old-fashioned act of writing, but using it as a tool has been great for expediting our content and making it more user-friendly and interactive. For example, we have started to utilize ChatGPT to help create our own version of the New Yorker-style “in this article you will read” summary. It takes a task that would otherwise eat valuable writing time and spits out a summarized version of our own words and research in a matter of seconds.
Viewing AI as a tool has greatly impacted the way I write and allowed me to focus on what’s important: the content. In my opinion, nothing will ever erase the value of human-written, human-researched writing. AI takes up another notch on a writer’s toolbelt, right alongside the dictionary and thesaurus.
