This is a question we’ve actually been asked by clients quite a bit recently – coincidental, or in response to what has been going on with Windows 10?  If you haven’t heard, Windows 10 has a new integration of Cortona (which I frankly find quite cool) and the responses are generated as Bing queries – something that is going to affect market share eventually.  But what about now?  Has Google been the “go to” for my potential buyers for a while now or have I been unaware that other search engines have slowly gotten market share over time?  We took a look at many websites we have access to, to answer those questions.  This is how many websites have generated their organic traffic over comparing 2014-2015 to 2013-2014 (given their industry/location – in %).  The first few don’t have data from previous years (new website) Edit – we are now updating this blog to compare traffic for these companies in 2018 now (what loyal clients!):

It is interesting to see that market share can get as high as 92.19% for a remodeling company and as low as 72.12% for a mediation lawyer.  Regardless, there is no doubt that Google still dominates any competitors in (likely) any space.  Some things to consider:

  • Some of these sites may not have a Yahoo/Bing listing to drive additional content
  • Though these sites are more often optimized for all search engines (which in itself if another blog) there is always a persistent focus on Google, sometimes via Google Webmaster Tools

Cortana just rolled out in the last week, so we’ll follow up in a few months to see if there is any definitive difference.

Edit for 2018

Looks like Yahoo is officially dead and Bing is coming in right after.  It is apparent that Google has made even more of a foothold, so all SEO should find all their opportunities within Google.
